In this episode, Laura discusses the alarming decision of the Parole Board to release Colin Pitchfork, a double child murderer, serial rapist, stalker, and flasher. Laura explains why she believes Pitchfork is an extremely dangerous psychopath who has gamed the system and pulled the wool over the eyes of the Parole Board. She deconstructs Pitchfork's index offences, offending behaviour and provides a detailed history of the case.
Pitchfork was convicted of stalking, raping, and killing 15-year-old girls Lynda Mann in November 1983 and Dawn Ashworth in Leicester in 1986. The murders of the two girls struck fear and terror into the local community.
The police were under pressure to catch the killer and turned to scientist Alec Jeffrey's for help. This was the first time DNA was used in a police investigation.
Despite Pitchfork's attempts to evade detection, a DNA intelligence-led screen was successfully used to catch him. He admitted to flashing over 1000 women and committing more sexual assaults, but he pled guilty to the rapes and murders of Lynda and Dawn, one indecent assault of a 16-year-old girl, threatening her with a screwdriver and knife to her throat, and one count of perverting the course of justice.
Pitchfork was diagnosed with psychopathy and serious psychosexual pathology by a court-appointed psychiatrist and received two life sentences. However, in 2009, his sentence was reduced to a minimum of 28 years due to "exceptional progress." In 2016, he was moved to an open prison, and now, in 2023, the Parole Board has decided he is "safe" to be released.
Laura argues that this decision is not only alarming for the families of Lynda and Dawn but also for all future girls and women. Psychopaths like Pitchfork are pathological liars, extremely manipulative and devious, and have no empathy or remorse. They will continue to offend, and no current cure or treatment exists to rehabilitate them.
Pitchfork has changed his name and appearance twice and has even trained as a carer for disabled people, making him a potential danger to the most vulnerable among us. Laura urges viewers to take action by writing to the Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary, Alex Chalk, to express their concern about this decision and flawed assessment. Women and girls' safety must be the priority.
