On Friday 14 July Rex Heuermann, a husband and father of two, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder for the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello.
The victim's human remains were found within a quarter mile of one another, covered in burlap along Ocean Parkway on Long Island's South Shore in 2010.
Rex Heuermann is also the prime suspect in the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes. His lawyer says Heuermann, who was held without bail, denies committing the killings, and wept after his arrest.
In this episode Laura discusses the victimology, including who the victims were, what they shared in common, how they were found and what it tells us about the person who killed them. Laura also talks about the extensive police investigation by the Multi-Agency Task Force which was formed in January 2022 and how Heuermann came on their radar within two months of reviewing the case - which highlights this case was solvable in 2010. However, key investigative leads were not followed up.
Laura shares her insight and expert analysis about the profile of the killer and other serial killer cases who are very similar. For Laura, there are some stand out patterns which cannot and must not be ignored. You will not want to miss this. It might just save your life.
